Dotty Art Technique: Pointillism · Craftwhack
Have you always pointilled? Pointed? Pointillised?
I learned nigh this technique in high school when I chose to make an entire 18×24″ pointillism cartoon of the crotch of some human being wearing jeans that I found in a magazine. The, um, folds of the jeans were perfect for this technique. Side note: isn't 'crotch' one of the best words e'er? It makes me giggle like a 7 year old every time.
Anyway, we used a grid cartoon technique to re-create the epitome in cartoon course onto the illustration lath, simply my way is FAR easier if you are just getting started and desire to try this technique out.
The but catch is that it involves a light box. If y'all don't accept i already, you can score one on Amazon for pretty cheap, or hack 1 using a string of Christmas lights nether a turned-over plastic bin.
So, back to pointillism. Remember Seurat? This is probably his well-nigh famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and it's at the Fine art Institute here in Chicago, and I FREAKED the first time I saw it. I similar pointillism. This is all dots, and it's like 6×10 anxiety.
The reasons I love pointillism so much are:
1. Information technology's repetitive
two. It's meditative
3. It's easy to get a dandy event
Of form, it takes a long time. Y'all aren't going to be able to throw a few dots onto a piece of newspaper and call it a solar day- the beauty is in the time it takes to make all those thousands of dots look like something on the paper. You get to slow down, listen to a podcast, drink some tea, and dot.
It's a lot like Zentangle and coloring pages in this aspect, so I think this will appeal to those of y'all who like those sorts of activities. Also- if you want to just quickly get started, all you really need is a pen and some paper.
I took a slightly less detailed arroyo to my pointillism projects than Seurat did, and for these 2 I traced round object with pencil and just dotted effectually them. More dots for a heavier look, fewer dots, spread out more for lighter areas. You tin can vary your speed as you get into it as well. I dot pretty quickly when I'm trying to fill in a darker area, but then I tiresome down and dot more than deliberately in lighter areas.
The colorful ones are done with Sharpies, the black one is done in Micron.
With the black pointillism, I constitute an paradigm from my InStyle mag I have all the same to read, and made a photocopy. Then I taped that onto the low-cal box with a slice of paper over it and started dotting abroad. I began with the darkest parts of the photograph, and moved progressively lighter. Meaning, I filled int he darkest parts first, moved onto the next darkest parts, etc. I wanted to keep the similarly shaded areas looking the aforementioned.
That'due south pretty much it- yous tin go as detailed as you desire. I sort of focused on doing Anne'south face and left her trunk mostly untouched. There'due south a joke there somewhere.
Y'all can see the progression of the drawing beneath. On the left are the pics with the calorie-free box turned on, and the right are with it off.
HEY ANNE HATHAWAY, I BETCHYA NEVER BEEN POINTILLIZED Before. Yo.
And then, because I couldn't stop with the damn dots, already, I made another.
Since yous're no doubt completely in love with pointillism at this betoken, I take compiled some of the about inspiring, mind-blowing examples of pointillism from Seurat up to contemporary pointillism artists. So practiced.
